How to use the Area Converter

  1. Type an area in the From box. It starts at 85 square meters, a typical apartment.
  2. Choose the From and To units, for example m² and ft².
  3. Read the result in the To box, or type there to convert the other way.
  4. Use the swap button to reverse the units, and the chips to see the area in every other unit.

Formula

result = value × (from-unit in m²) ÷ (to-unit in m²)

All units convert through square meters: 1 cm² = 0.0001 m², 1 ha = 10,000 m², 1 km² = 1,000,000 m², 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m², 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m² and 1 mi² = 2,589,988.11 m².

Area Converter questions

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply square meters by 10.764 to get square feet. For example, a 100 m² apartment is 1,076 ft². To go back, multiply square feet by 0.0929. Property listings in different countries use different units, so convert before comparing prices per unit area.

What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?

A hectare is larger: 1 hectare is 2.471 acres, and 1 acre is 0.4047 hectares. A hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 meters on each side, while an acre is 43,560 ft². Hectares are standard in metric countries; acres are used mainly in the US and UK.

How many square feet are in an acre?

An acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 square meters. A US football field without the end zones is about 1.1 acres. One square mile contains 640 acres. A tennis court covers about 0.06 acres and a full-size soccer pitch about 1.8 acres, which helps when picturing land sizes. In hectares, an acre is 0.4047 ha.

Should I use square feet or square meters for flooring?

Use whichever unit your supplier sells in, and add 5 to 10% for cutting waste. Measure each rectangular part of the room, multiply length by width, and add the parts together. Converting the total at the end avoids rounding errors.

How do I calculate roof area for materials?

Measure the length and width of each roof plane and multiply, then add the planes together. Add 10 to 15% for pitch, overlaps and waste. Shingles in the US are sold by the square, which covers 100 square feet (9.29 m²).

Why do the areas in two property listings not match?

Listings often measure different things: gross external area includes walls, while net internal area does not, and some markets include balconies or shared space. Check which measurement standard a listing uses before comparing sizes or prices. When in doubt, ask for the floor plan with measured room dimensions and calculate the area yourself.

How precise should area conversions be?

Use two decimals for rooms and apartments, one decimal for houses, and whole numbers for large land parcels. Construction estimates need more precision than listings. Convert once at the end of a calculation rather than rounding at every step. Land registries usually record areas to the nearest square meter or hundredth of an acre.
